Monday 10 June - Western Brook Pond

Rocky Harbour
Bus ride up the coast to visit Western Brook Pond. It was sunny along the coast but cloudy inland - later on we had bright sun. There was a 45 minute walk to the landing where we took the boat trip. The path was very good - through biggy scrub land with many curious tree forms, many of them dead. There was very little sign of animal or bird life apart from a few small birds and a couple of Canada Jays.  After a hamburger nch we took a two hour boat trit. This is a series of fjords that have been cut off from the sea for millions of years and consequently the water is fresh, very clear and pure and sustains very little life. The views were impressive but very difficult to photograph effectively so I just enjoyed the ride  and only took a picture of the Pissing Bear Falls.

On the way back we stopped for a quick look at the lighthouse at Lobster Bay.

This evening we went to a performance of Anchors Away at the Ocean View Hotel. We had tickets but were advised to go early to ensure a good table in the bar. We had an enormous salad each followed by a good Beer Battered Newfoundland Cod and Chips. I had a Guinness brewed in Ireland and then helped Mary to consume a bottle of Chilean Sauvignon Blanc.

The show was excellent. Five local performers entertained us for almost three hours with local songs and stories. The crowd joined in and it was a lot of fun. For me, the mot memorable was a song about an immigrants thoughts.
