Today was a lot of travelling. Twillingate to Farewell which is the ferry terminal for Fogo and Change Islands. The ferry is well equipped and there is a lot of room for passengers to spread out on the 45 minute trip to Fogo. The sea was very calm and the ride was very smooth. We had a local guide, Edward Heath, who had been a sea captain, mainly in the arctic. He told us a lot about the reduction in the number of inhabitants, partly as a result of the reduction in the cod fishery and partly the political decision to move people out of the smaller centres. This has resulted in a centralization of the education system with all children now coming daily into one central school. The land is pretty barren.

Brimstone Head - thought by the Flat Earth Society to be one of the corners of the world |
The ferry to Change Island was very quick - some 25 minutes. This is an even smaller island with just one road and a population of about 150-200. We visited a sanctuary for Newfoundland ponies who number around 600. They are descended from a variety of ponies brought over by the early settlers - Dartmoor, Exmoor, New Forest, Welsh etc.

Our bus had to back on to the ferry in order to be able to drive off at Change |
Saw a lot of trees and lakes today.
