We visited the Grenville Centre which gave us a good insight into the living conditions endured by many in Labrador and Newfoundland in the late 19th centuries and for the first fifty years of the 20th. Grenville set out to improve the living conditions as well as establishing medical facilities.
Lunch was on the way to Anse aux Meadows. There was a good selection available and we both chose scallops which were well prepared although breaded and deep fried.
The visit to Anse aux Meadows, a Viking site was spoilt by the rain which was very heavy at times
The colors in the rock were very varied |
There was a lot of snow around. |
We stopped at a gift shop on the return to the hotel. The highlight was a Newfoundland dog which had been brought in specially for us to see. He weighs 74 kilos.
He's pretty friendly for a large dog. |
This evening we went to the Viking Feast
close to the lighthouse. It is set in a low building covered in earth and sod
looking a bit like n air raid shelter of unpleasant memory. The meal was a
Viking one starting with cod tongues and capelin. The capelin was a small dried fish similar to
Bombay Duck of Indian cuisine. There
was some play acting with the staff in period costume which culminated in a
series of mock court cases. The meal was
pretty basic as would have been the case in Viking days.
