Today we took the bus to St. Barbe for the
ferry to Labrador. We passed several moose on the way. The water was pretty calm and the ferry ride
was quite relaxing. After lunch we headed out to Red Bay to visit the Parks
Canada historic site which covered the Basque whaling period. The Basques came over from Europe in small
boats to take whales and prepare whale oil which was in great demand in Europe
at that time. It was a dangerous occupation and many died here.
On the way back
to L’Anse au Clair we stopped off at the Point Amour lighthouse which was one
of the tallest in the Gulf. The area was “grassed” with a low springy
vegetation with low occasional plants. The rocky shore line would have been
great to explore.
This part of
Labrador was pretty much scrub with occasional boggy land and some stands of
low trees. We passed over a pretty big river with many torrents and low
waterfalls. The Pinware river is one of the most popular salmon fishing spots.
