Saturday 5 January supplemental - Excitement in our Street

In the early evening the peace was disturbed by the alarms of a fire truck which came to a stand just up from us. The Sapeurs Pompiers got out, secured the truck and entered a building across from us. They then began to lay hoses. The fire must have been across the courtyard in the back of the building because residents in the front were leaning out the windows enjoying the spectacle. Soon the entire street was watching the pompiers in their shiny bright helmets and a couple of nosy little old ladies tried to enter the building. Eventually a police man was stationed at the entrance.

The show went on for a couple of hours although it appeared that the fire was put out quickly. Afterwards the pompiers stood around chatting and drinking bottled water.

This is the best excitement we have had since a hurdy gurdy man came around and everyone threw money out of their windows for him.
